Songtaew

are customized pick ups. They are equipped with 2 benches and a roof. There are at least 15 routes in and around Khon Kaen. Cost per ride is 10Bt and operating hours from 5am until 8pm. Songtaews will stop at any point of their route to pick up or let off passengers.

Songtaew route maps can be obtained at the Tourism Authority, Prachasomoson Rd.

Tuk Tuk

Three wheeled vehicles with 2-stroke engines.

Be sure to negotiate the price in advance because many drivers overcharge non-locals (foreigners and Thais).

Especially newly arrived tourists with baggage are the target of overcharging.

A normal trip in Khon Kaen is between 50 and 80Bt, 10Bt more at nighttimes and during rain. A ride to KK University or to the airport should cost no more than 150Bt.

Many drivers can be reached by mobile phone so if you find a reliable driver ask him for his number.

As most of the drivers do not speak English ask the service staff at the place you want to be picked up. They will be glad to help you.

Taxi

Since March 2010 metered taxis are available in Khon Kaen
Taxis are mostly much cheaper than tuk tuks.

Tariff:
Startup fee 30 bt, includes the first 2 km or 8 minutes slow traffic/waiting
after that 4 Bt/ km and/or 1 Bt/min slow traffic/waiting (whatever is more), outside ring road 10 Bt/km.

Samlor und Motorradtaxi

Bicycle rickshaws are still found in Khon Kaen's streets at a large number. The prices should be similar or slightly lower than those of the tuk tuks.

Motorbike taxis are predominantly found at bus stations.
